Composer and sound artist Oleg Krokhalev (b. 1992, Perm, Russia) creates work at the intersection of music, performance, and technology. His practice spans acoustic and electronic composition, DIY robotic instruments, and sound installation — where he explores sound as a tactile and spatial experience — as well as music for film and theatre.

He studied composition with Prof. Vladimir Tarnopolski at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory and later completed his Master’s degree with Prof. José-María Sánchez-Verdú at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf, where he deepened his interest in combining compositional practices with music theatre and sound installation.

His work has been performed by Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Zohn Collective, Ensemble Garage, MCME, and the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has collaborated with notable soloists such as violist Aida-Carmen Soanea and flutists Maria Kalesnikava and Ivan Bushuev.

Recent highlights include two operas — Notes from the Underground (Theatre of Nations, Moscow 2021) and Transient (after Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Düsseldorf, 2023); the score for the Buenos Aires-based YouTube series I Quit (2024); and participation in the Gustav Mahler Composer Academy (Austria). Krokhalev is a two-time laureate of the Aksenov Family Foundation — for an orchestral commission with the Moscow Philharmonic (Tchaikovsky concert hall, 2021) and a sound installation in Baku, Azerbaijan (Mugam-centre, 2024).

Deeply involved in theatre, Krokhalev has composed for over 15 productions across Russia, including immersive works such as Tolstoy 2021 at the Yasnaya Polyana/Tula International Festival. He was an active participant in key projects like SOTA (Golden Mask Institute), Introduction (curated by Sergei Newski), Südseite Nachts (Stuttgart), and Underground and Improvisation (Akademie der Künste, Berlin). Between 2012 and 2018, he was both a participant and later a coordinator of the Young Composers Academy in Tchaikovsky. From 2020 to 2022, he served as chief music editor at Vash Dosug magazine in Moscow.

Krokhalev has been awarded the DAAD Prize, the Deutschlandstipendium, and multiple private and institutional grants in support of his compositional work.
